In my second year of university I started a tradition by inviting friends over before Christmas every year to host a Gingerbread house extravaganza. Too old for that? Hells no. It began with those pre-cooked kits where all we had to do was assemble the pieces with the provided icing.
For some absurd reason, these crappy kits still come with candies that are literally not edible with gingerbread (i.e. rock hard candies, mints and gum) so I always stockpiled on M&Ms. Anyway, year after year this quickly evolved into my mom helping bake our own gingerbread in creative shapes. One year we did a castle with a drawbridge, another year we did an epic pirate ship with a Fruit Roll-Up sail. Yes, my mom is awesome.
